What is a sweater?
Sweater A sweater is a knitted garment worn over the shoulders, with no front fastenings and pulled on over the head. The main design feature of a classic sweater is a high stand-up collar, which can be worn in one or more layers, hugging the neck.

The term comes from the English word "to sweat." In the late 19th century, the garment was initially created as clothing for weight loss and vigorous exercise, and later became a practical uniform for sailors and athletes.
A sweater is distinctly different from other knitwear items. A jumper has a round neckline without a collar, a pullover has a V-neck, and a cardigan has fastenings (buttons or zippers) along the entire front.
Main types
Classic (basic) sweater — This is a smooth-knit garment made of fine or medium-weight yarn (cashmere, merino). It features a fitted turtleneck and can be worn as a stand-alone piece or as a base layer in layered outfits.
Chunky sweater A voluminous garment made from thick yarns such as sheepskin or alpaca. These garments often feature an oversized silhouette and dropped shoulders.

Aran sweater — a historic Irish design with a textured, raised pattern of braids, diamonds, and plaits. Traditionally, it is made from undyed sheepskin, which retains its natural water-repellent properties.
Scandinavian sweater (lopapeysa) It features a distinctive circular jacquard pattern on the yoke. The pattern extends from the neckline to the shoulders, creating a continuous geometric or floral design.

What to combine with
For everyday looks, a chunky knit sweater is paired with straight-leg jeans, corduroy trousers, and chunky leather boots. This creates a striking textured contrast between the loose knit and the thicker hem.
In smart-casual business attire, a thin cashmere sweater is worn under a structured jacket or wool suit. In these outfits, the knitwear replaces the classic shirt, maintaining a clean silhouette.

For a layered look, layer an oversized sweater over a long white cotton shirt with a flared collar and cuffs. It can also be paired with a silk slip dress to play with the contrasting weight of matte wool and flowing silk.
Cropped sweaters require careful proportions. They pair with high-waisted trousers or skirts to conceal the waist and visually lengthen the legs.
