What are Arans?

Arans — is a style of textured knitting that is characterized by complex interweaving of braids, strands, diamonds, and bobbles on a smooth background.

The term comes from the Aran Islands, located off the west coast of Ireland. The technique originated there in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a way to create warm and durable clothing for local fishermen.

Traditional Aran sweaters were made from undyed sheep's wool, known as baunin. This material retained its natural lanolin, giving the finished garment pronounced water-repellent properties.

The dense, voluminous knit structure creates an additional layer of air, making Aran-infused clothing exceptionally warm and wear-resistant in harsh weather conditions.

Basic types of patterns

Aran knitting is a combination of traditional elements, each with historical significance.

  • Braids (Cables) — the most recognizable element of textured knitwear, visually reminiscent of fishing ropes and cordage. This pattern was believed to bring good luck and ensure safety at sea.
  • Diamonds — interlacing patterns that mimic the shape of fishing nets. This motif symbolizes wealth, success, and a bountiful catch.
  • Honeycomb — a three-dimensional pattern that symbolizes the diligence of bees and a well-deserved reward for hard physical labor.
  • Zigzags - broken lines reflecting the winding paths on the cliffs of the Aran Islands, as well as the fickleness of family life.
  • Tree of Life — a complex vertical ornament that symbolizes clan unity, long life, and the uninterrupted connection between generations.

What to wear with Aran sweaters

Due to its rich texture and volume, Aran knitwear is the main accent of any outfit. It requires sleek or simple complementary pieces to avoid visual overload.

For a classic everyday look, pair an oversized Aran sweater with straight-leg, heavy denim jeans and chunky leather lace-up boots.

A striking styling technique is to play with contrasting textures. Thick, textured knitwear looks harmonious when paired with light, flowing materials. For example, a basic Aran sweater can be complemented with a silk slip-style skirt and ankle boots.

As part of the smart-casual style, Aran knitwear is integrated into layered looks. The jumper is worn over a crisp white shirt with a stiff collar, complemented by classic pleated trousers and loafers.
