What is a pixie?
Pixie haircut — is a short women's hairstyle in which the hair on the back and sides of the head is cut shorter than the hair on the crown and bangs. The name comes from the English word pixie (fairy, elf), which reflects the light, playful and at the same time feminine character of the hairstyle.
The haircut became fashionable in the 1950s thanks to actress Audrey Hepburn and her role in Roman Holiday. In the 1960s, the hairstyle gained iconic status after British supermodel Twiggy adopted it.
The main architectural feature of the pixie is the completely open neck and behind-the-ears area. This shape creates a distinct accent on the oval face, highlights the cheekbones, and visually lengthens the neck.
Main types
The modern haircut has several variations, which are selected taking into account the hair structure and face shape:
- Classic Pixie: Featuring an ultra-short length and neat, thinned bangs, the hairstyle maximally reveals the face and requires minimal styling.
- Asymmetrical Pixie: Characterized by elongated bangs swept to one side. The opposite temple is cut short or shaved with clippers.
- Long pixie (pixie bob): It has a smooth transition in length with longer strands at the crown and back. The shape allows for experimentation with parting and styling texture.
- Textured (choppy) pixie: A multi-layered haircut with strands of varying lengths. The cutting technique creates additional root volume and a slightly tousled effect.
What to combine with
A short haircut works beautifully in contrast with decidedly feminine pieces. It balances flowing slip dresses, silk blouses, and low-cut tops without making the look overly romantic.
In a business-chic and minimalist style, the pixie cut complements tailored pantsuits, smooth knit turtlenecks, and classic cotton shirts. The absence of long hair on the shoulders emphasizes the strict geometric cut and accentuates the shoulder line of the jacket.
The exposed neck and ears make the cut the perfect backdrop for statement jewelry. Large hoop earrings, chunky chandeliers, wide metal chokers, and tiered necklaces look great with the pixie cut.
