What is brushing: styling technique and role in style

Katarzyna Nowak 3 min read

What is brushing?

Brushing (from the English word "brush") is a hair styling technique using a special round brush and a hair dryer, as well as the name of the hairdressing tool itself. The main technical goal of the process is to create natural root volume, smooth the hair cuticle for a glossy shine, and gently shape the hair without the use of hot curling irons or stylers.

In the context of personal style, this style is a fundamental element of the quiet luxury aesthetic and an integral part of the business dress code. It creates a well-groomed effect without visible traces of styling products. Smooth texture and soft shape are considered the standard for expert image and business portraits.

Main types

Classic straight brushing involves straightening strands while maintaining volume at the roots and leaving the ends perfectly straight. This style perfectly complements a strict dress code (business formal) and clothing with smooth textures, such as silk, suit wool, or satin.

A voluminous blowout brush creates large, bouncy curls at the ends. It's typical of a smart casual style and pairs beautifully with textured knits, cashmere turtlenecks, and loose cotton shirts.

A separate technique is styling bangs and strands of hair around the face (curtain bangs). This is an accent technique that directs the hair away from the face, which stylists use to soften strict, architecturally designed clothing, such as double-breasted jackets with sharp shoulders.

How to match with your wardrobe

When creating an outfit, styling works as a tool for balancing proportions. Voluminous and flowing hair visually balances oversized pieces, including wide gabardine trench coats and oversized, mannish jackets. This hairstyle also serves as a harmonious backdrop for chunky, statement jewelry.

The smooth lines of brushed-out strands offset the stiffness of classic two-piece suits and shirts with starched collars. This allows for a feminine, business-ready look without violating corporate etiquette.

For stage and public appearances, brushing is the professional standard. The smooth texture of the hair doesn't create visual noise on camera, doesn't snag on a lavalier microphone, and looks flawless with basic shades like navy blue, beige, or emerald.
