What is a poncho?
Poncho - is a type of loose-fitting outerwear, consisting of a single rectangular or round piece of fabric with a hole for the head in the center.
Historically, this garment is the traditional clothing of the Andean Indians of Latin America. It was originally made from thick alpaca or llama wool to protect against the cold and piercing mountain winds.

In modern fashion, the poncho has transformed from a functional ethnic garment into a versatile wardrobe staple. Today, it serves as a practical alternative to bulky cardigans, lightweight jackets, and demi-season coats.
Main types
Designers adapted the original cut to suit different stylistic needs, creating several basic variations:
- Traditional (ethnic): Made from thick wool, it features geometric or traditional patterns. The hem is often decorated with long fringe, and the color palette includes terracotta, ocher, and brown.
- Cape poncho: A more structured version made from coat fabrics (cashmere, drape). It often features armholes and a defined shoulder line, making it suitable for both elegant and business looks.
- Knitted poncho: A soft alternative to a bulky sweater. Made from thick knitwear or textured yarn, it's often complemented by a turtleneck or hood.
- Rain poncho: A practical raincoat made of waterproof materials (nylon, PVC) with sealed seams. Its loose fit allows it to be worn over a backpack or warm jacket during outdoor activities.

What to combine with
The key to styling a poncho is maintaining proportions. Since this garment creates a voluminous top, the bottom half of the look should be simple and form-fitting. Skinny jeans, straight trousers, a pencil skirt, or thick leggings are ideal choices.

A poncho is designed for layering. It's worn over a long-sleeved base layer: turtlenecks, long-sleeved tops, thin sweaters, or classic cotton shirts. Contrasting textures, such as smooth silk and thick wool, add a striking touch to the outfit.
To create an hourglass silhouette, the front of the fabric can be cinched at the waist with a wide leather belt. The back is left to flow freely, maintaining the garment's signature dynamic shape.

Tall tube boots, ankle boots with a sturdy heel, or classic loafers look great with ponchos. Cape-style ponchos are stylishly complemented by long leather gloves that cover the exposed forearm.
