Hair glossing: what it is and how it works

Olena Kovalenko 2 min read

What is hair glossing?

Glossing — is a cosmetic hair treatment designed to create intense shine, smoothness, and a "glass-like" effect. The method involves sealing the hair cuticle: the formula smooths the scales, allowing the surface to maximally reflect light.

Unlike traditional coloring, glossing products are ammonia-free. They don't penetrate deep into the hair structure and don't lighten the natural base. The treatment acts as a protective shield, protecting strands from mechanical damage, environmental influences, and moisture loss.

Main types of glossing

The procedure is adapted to different hair needs and is divided into several formats depending on the composition.

  • Transparent (colorless) glossing: The formula is pigment-free and works solely to improve texture. It provides moisture and a mirror-like shine to both natural and color-treated hair.
  • Colored (tinted) glossing: Contains semi-permanent pigments. They refresh the current color, deepen it, or neutralize unwanted tones, such as yellowness in blonde hair.

Salon glossing is a professional treatment using concentrated formulas, often applied immediately after coloring to seal in the results. At-home glossing involves maintenance masks, serums, and gloss-enhancing balms, which provide a less permanent but noticeable visual result until the first wash.

How to maintain the effect

The effect of salon glossing lasts from 3 to 6 weeks. The exact duration depends on the initial porosity of the hair and the frequency of washing.

To prolong the results, we recommend using sulfate-free shampoos. They gently cleanse the scalp without stripping the cuticle or washing away the formula from the hair's surface. It's also important to regularly use heat-protective sprays or creams when blow-drying and styling to prevent damage to the protective glossy layer.

Glossing can be repeated every 4-5 weeks. The treatment has a cumulative effect: with each session, hair becomes thicker, heavier, and smoother.
