What is a monokini?

Monokini — is a women's swimsuit that is a hybrid of a one-piece and separate style, in which the bodice and bottoms are connected by decorative elements or a strip of fabric.

Historically, the term had a different meaning. In 1964, Austrian designer Rudi Gernreich created the original monokini as a topless swimsuit. This style consisted solely of high-waisted bottoms and two thin suspender straps crossing over the chest.

The modern meaning of the term has evolved. Today, a monokini is a one-piece swimsuit with deep, sculpted cutouts on the sides, stomach, or back, visually uniting the top and bottom.

Distinctive features and types

The monokini's main visual feature is its optical illusion. From the back, this style often looks like a classic two-piece bikini, while from the front, it resembles a one-piece swimsuit with intricate cutouts.

In the classic version, the bodice and bottoms are connected by a wide or narrow vertical strip of fabric directly down the center of the stomach. Asymmetrical styles often feature a one-shoulder cut with diagonal or side slits, revealing only one side of the waist.

There are models with decorative joints, where the top and bottom are held together not by fabric but by metal hardware—rings, chains, and intricate lacing. Due to the abundance of cutouts, monokinis leave an uneven tan on the body, so this style is primarily used for beach parties, photo shoots, and lounging by the pool.

What to combine with

A monokini easily integrates into a resort wardrobe as a bodysuit or crop top. Wear it for a stroll along the waterfront with wide-leg linen palazzo pants, denim Bermuda shorts, or a flowy viscose maxi skirt.

The intricate cut of the swimsuit is seamlessly complemented by lightweight beach cover-ups. Monokinis are worn over translucent chiffon kimonos, mesh tunics, or unbuttoned oversized shirts made of fine cotton.

To create a complete poolside look, pair this style with statement accessories. Wide-brimmed straw hats with raw brim, oversized horn-rimmed sunglasses, and wedge sandals or leather gladiator sandals complement these swimsuits.
