What is a bib?
Dickey — is a removable piece of clothing that covers the neck and upper chest, imitating the collar and front of a shirt, blouse or turtleneck.
Historically, this item emerged as a practical alternative to a full-length men's shirt. A starched chest insert was significantly easier to wash, iron, and replace than a full shirt.

In modern wardrobes, this accessory is used to create layered looks. It allows you to add the illusion of an underlayer without creating excess volume around the sleeves, back, and waist.
The design of the garment consists of a collar (stand-up, turn-down, or turtleneck) with a chest and sometimes back section sewn onto it. For ease of wearing, the bib can be secured with ties or elastic bands on the sides.
Main types
Depending on the material and purpose, there are several main variations of this accessory in modern fashion.
- Knitted collars. A winter accessory that replaces the traditional scarf. They feature a high turtleneck and are made of wool, cashmere, or blended yarns. They are often decorated with textured ribbed knits or cable patterns.

- Shirt fronts. Made from cotton, poplin, or silk, they feature a classic turn-down collar, button placket, and smooth bib. They perfectly mimic a formal shirt worn underneath.
- Decorative bibs. Accent accessories made of lace, tulle, or velvet. Decorated with ruffles, pearls, embroidery, or bows, they serve as standalone embellishments.

- Sports bibs. A narrow, functional category. These are lightweight capes made of synthetic materials that are worn over the main uniform to separate teams during training.
What to combine with
Cotton shirt bibs are worn under fitted crewneck or V-neck sweaters, knit vests, and cardigans. This allows you to create a smart office look without creating unsightly folds on the sleeves.

Knitted pieces are worn over dresses, thin long-sleeved tops, or basic shirts as a standalone top layer. This technique adds texture to the outfit and provides extra warmth.
When paired with outerwear, knitted collars are worn under coats, classic trench coats, down jackets, and biker jackets instead of bulky scarves. The collar fits snugly around the neck and doesn't unravel in gusts of wind.
Decorative lace options are worn over contrasting basic t-shirts, sleek turtlenecks, or minimalist dresses. This stylistic twist transforms everyday essentials into eveningwear.
