What are banana pants?
Banana pants — This style of trousers is loosely cut through the hips and tapers smoothly toward the ankle, visually reminiscent of the fruit of the same name. The silhouette creates a distinctive oval contour of the legs, adding volume at the top and accentuating the waist and narrow ankles.

Historically, this style originated in the 1940s among jazz musicians. The peak of their global popularity came in the 1980s, when they became a staple in both casual and business attire.
Distinctive features
The key design feature of banana pants is their high waistline. It's often accented with deep tucks, pleats, or paperbag-style gathers, creating the necessary volume on the hips.

The legs have a distinctly oval cut. Unlike skinny pants, they don't hug the calves, and unlike palazzo pants or classic straight trousers, they don't fall straight down.
Traditionally, banana pants have a cropped, 7/8 length. They are also often worn with a cuffed hem to expose the narrowest part of the leg.
What to combine with
To harmonize the voluminous bottom, use a tight-fitting or tucked-in top - turtlenecks, bodysuits, crop tops, basic T-shirts and fitted shirts.

Cropped jackets, such as biker jackets or bombers, are ideal for outerwear. Structured jackets that reach the waist or just below also help maintain proper proportions.

The style is versatile when it comes to footwear. To visually elongate the silhouette, pair the trousers with heels—classic pumps or sandals with thin straps. For everyday looks, pair them with flats, such as loafers or minimalist white sneakers.
