Jacquard in knitting: what it is, types, and what to wear it with

What is jacquard in knitting?

Jacquard in knitting Jacquard is a technique for creating multicolor patterns using two or more threads of different colors in a single row. The name of the technique comes from Joseph Marie Jacquard, who invented the loom for patterned fabrics. This principle was later adapted for hand and machine knitting.

The main technical feature of classic jacquard knitting is the formation of non-working threads (drafts) on the back of the fabric. The thread of the desired color is brought to the front side only to knit a specific stitch of the pattern. This gives jacquard knits increased density and thermal insulation. The fabric essentially consists of two layers of yarn: the front pattern and the back drafts.

Main types of jacquard

There are several varieties of this technique, differing in the way the threads are interwoven and the appearance of the finished product.

  • Traditional (Norwegian) Jacquard and Fair Isle. These are classic patterns featuring snowflakes, deer, and geometric shapes. They are distinguished by frequent color changes within a row, creating short, neat stitches on the back.
  • Double-face jacquard. A knitting technique without draw-throughs, which produces a fabric that is equally smooth on both sides, with the colors inverted on the back. The resulting garment is very dense, warm, and has no reverse side in the traditional sense.

  • Lazy jacquard. The pattern is formed by removing stitches from the previous row. Each row uses only one yarn, making the knitting process easier and the fabric less stiff.
  • Intarsia. This technique is used to knit large color blocks, such as a single pattern on the chest of a sweater. Unlike classic jacquard, the thread does not stretch across the entire back, but crosses at the color change.

What to wear with jacquard items

Due to the highly visual impact of the jacquard pattern, these pieces are best paired with solid-colored basics. Straight-leg jeans, classic pleated trousers, or minimalist midi skirts balance out the complex knit pattern.

A jacquard vest is a great tool for creating layered looks. It's perfect over a crisp white shirt, a sleek turtleneck, or a basic cotton long-sleeve top.

A voluminous jacquard sweater fits seamlessly into casual styles and après-ski aesthetics. It's worn with crisp corduroy trousers or wool leggings. Jacquard accessories, such as hats, scarves, and mittens, provide a vibrant accent. They complement neutral outerwear: a solid-color down jacket, a shearling aviator, or a simple wool coat.
