What is vintage?

Vintage in clothing is Authentic items created between 20 and 50 years ago. Currently, this category includes wardrobe items produced from the 1970s to the early 2000s.

The term originates from winemaking, where it refers to a high-quality wine from a specific vintage. This principle remains true in fashion: not just any old item is considered vintage, but only those that vividly reflect the style, fashion trends, and spirit of its era. For example, a slip dress from the 1990s or a wide-shouldered jacket from the 1980s.

Clothing is classified by age. Items over 50 years old are considered antiques. Items under 20 years old are considered modern secondhand.

Distinctive features

Vintage clothing is historically representative. It showcases silhouettes, prints, and tailoring details characteristic of a particular decade, such as the flared trousers of the 1970s or the A-line miniskirts of the 1960s.

These items are characterized by the use of high-quality materials rarely found in today's mass-market fashion: heavy silk, fine wool, and dense cotton. The design features distinctive patterns, hand-stitched seams, and durable hardware—metal zippers, unique buttons, and a lack of plastic parts.

It's important to distinguish vintage from retro style. Retro is modern clothing that is styled after the fashions of yesteryear. Vintage is an original item produced specifically during that era.

How to wear

The key to integrating vintage into a modern wardrobe is balance. Pairing one or two vintage pieces with modern basics helps avoid a theatrical costume effect. For example, a vintage jacket looks harmonious with modern straight-leg jeans and a basic white T-shirt.

Vintage pieces often require tailoring. A tailor can adjust the hem or sleeve length to suit a modern silhouette while maintaining the garment's original aesthetic.

Using vintage accessories is the easiest way to incorporate this style into everyday looks. Rigid bags, silk scarves, and chunky clips or brooches add the right accents without being overwhelming.

The styling is based on a play of contrasts: a mix of textures and styles. A delicate vintage dress in fine fabric is styled with modern chunky boots or a voluminous chunky knit sweater.
