What is corduroy?
Velveteen (corduroy fabric) is a dense material with a thick pile and characteristic longitudinal ribs on the face, traditionally made of cotton, and in modern versions with the addition of viscose, polyester, or elastane. In Russian, the name comes from the English word velvet (velvet), however, in English terminology this fabric is designated by the word corduroy.

The production technology involves a complex weaving of threads. Additional weft threads form loops, which are then cut, creating a voluminous pile in even stripes.
The material's key properties include high wear resistance and excellent heat retention. The fabric is wrinkle-resistant and has a distinctive texture that changes color depending on the lighting and pile direction.
Main types
Cord is the densest type, with a wide rib (about 5 millimeters) and a high pile. The fabric is heavy and stiff, so it is primarily used for outerwear, warm jackets, coats, and heavy trousers.

Microcorduroy (rib corduroy) is characterized by its softness, flexibility, narrow rib (1-3 mm wide), and short pile. The material drapes beautifully and is used to create shirts, dresses, skirts, and lightweight suits.

Shaped corduroy has a complex texture, where the ribs and pile create geometric patterns (herringbone, checkered, or jacquard) by cutting the pile to different heights. Stretch corduroy is a modern variation with the addition of elastane fibers. It provides a comfortable fit and is used for tailored trousers and skirts.
What to combine with
Thick ribbed corduroy looks most striking when contrasted with smooth materials. Classic combinations include corduroy jackets with silk blouses, satin tops, or smooth leather pieces.

For everyday looks, corduroy trousers or skirts pair harmoniously with chunky knits and cashmere sweaters. They also look great with heavy denim and basic cotton tees.
Since the shaggy texture and light and shadow visually add volume, it's recommended to balance out chunky corduroy pieces. Wide-leg corduroy trousers are best paired with a simple, fitted top.
Corduroy clothing pairs well with accessories and shoes made of matte leather or suede. For a smart-casual business look, a corduroy suit pairs beautifully with loafers or ankle boots with a sturdy heel.
