What are sleepers?
Sleepers — these are lightweight shoes without laces or fasteners, with a flat sole or minimal heel, distinguished by a closed toe and a characteristic protruding tongue on the instep.
Historically, slippers originated in Britain in the 19th century as aristocratic house shoes. They were called Prince Albert slippers after Queen Victoria's husband, who introduced the fashion for wearing them with a tuxedo in informal settings.

Initially, shoes were made exclusively of velvet with thin leather soles. Embroidered designs featuring the owner's family crest or monogram were used as decoration.
In the 20th century, slippers expanded beyond the home. Today, they are fully-fledged street shoes, used for both casual and evening looks.
Distinctive features and materials
The main design difference between slippers and loafers is their smooth vamp. They lack the semicircular moccasin seam at the toe and the cross strap with a slot or buckle.
The shape of the sleepers is characterized by an elongated or slightly rounded toe, a deep cut on the sides and a one-piece cut at the top.

Velvet, velour, and suede remain traditional materials, emphasizing the aristocratic origins of the style. Contemporary collections often feature models made of smooth matte or patent leather, as well as textile options such as tweed or tapestry.
The decoration ranges from austere minimalism to lavish embroidery, including heraldry or animal motifs. Some models are embellished with tassels, metal studs, or rhinestones.
What to combine with
The main rule for wearing slippers is to keep the ankle exposed. They are usually worn barefoot or with invisible slippers.

Cropped styles are the most flattering pairing with trousers and jeans. Slippers look great with 7/8-length trousers, culottes, chinos, and straight-leg jeans with raw hems.
When paired with dresses and skirts, these shoes pair well with silk slip dresses, midi-length skirts, and light summer sundresses.

Embroidered velvet slippers offer an elegant alternative to pumps in an evening wardrobe, especially when paired with a pantsuit.
For a smart casual look, choose leather or suede styles in basic shades. They complement everyday outfits of a basic T-shirt, a straight blazer, and cropped trousers.
