What are loafers?
Loafers — This is a classic model of shoes without laces or fasteners, characterized by a rigid sole and a low, wide heel.

The name comes from the English word loafer (loafer) because the shoe can be easily put on with one movement. Historically, this style originated from the footwear of Norwegian sailors in the early 20th century and was later adapted by American brands, first as men's and then women's casual footwear.
The main design feature of loafers, which distinguishes them from slip-ons or ballet flats, is the semicircular seam on the vamp, like a moccasin. Loafers always have a rigid, molded last and a distinct, flat heel.
Main types
Over the course of its existence, the basic design of loafers has received several stable variations, which differ in decorative elements.
- Penny loafers: A classic model with a leather vamp bridge with a diamond-shaped hole cut into it. Historically, American students used this hole to hide pennies.
- Tassel loafers: Shoes adorned with two leather tassels on the toe. This model is considered one of the most formal in the line.
- Horsebit loafers: A style popularized by the Gucci fashion house in the 1950s. Its distinctive feature is a metal buckle shaped like a horse bit—a part of a harness.

- Venetian loafers: simple shoes without decorative overlays on the vamp, reminiscent of formal shoes.
- Chunky loafers: A modern take on the classic with a thick, tractor-like sole that adds a touch of ruggedness to the look.
What to combine with
In business attire, classic penny loafers or buckled styles offer a comfortable alternative to pumps. They complement two-piece trouser suits, straight midi skirts, and tailored cotton shirts.

Loafers with chunky soles are perfect for smart-casual looks. They're paired with straight-leg blue jeans, oversized straight-leg jackets, and basic T-shirts.

A trendy style trick involves wearing loafers with high ribbed socks—white or in accent colors. This combination looks especially striking with cropped trousers that reveal the ankle or short skirts.
In feminine looks, minimalist Venetian loafers or tasseled styles create a stylish contrast. Pairing formal men's shoes with lightweight chiffon dresses, pleated skirts, and silk blouses balances the overly romantic nature of the outfit.
