What are ruffles?
Ruffles - is a decorative element of clothing, consisting of a narrow strip of fabric, ribbon or lace, densely gathered into small folds.

The element appeared in the 15th and 16th centuries in the form of voluminous collars. It later became iconic of the Victorian era and firmly entrenched in the aesthetics of the Romantic style.
The main difference from similar pieces lies in the method of assembly. Unlike flounces, which are cut in the round, and ruffles, which are sewn to the top edge, ruffles are formed by straight gathering. The stitching runs down the center or with a minimal indent from the edge, creating double-sided volume.
Main types
Ruffles are categorized by design as single or double. Single ruffles gather along one edge, while double ruffles have a seam running exactly down the middle of the fabric strip, creating lush gathers on both sides.

The visual effect depends on the chosen fabric. Weightless fabrics like chiffon, organza, or silk create a flowing, translucent silhouette. Dense materials like cotton, taffeta, or denim create a rigid, architectural volume that holds its shape well.

Decor is placed in various parts of the garment. In portrait styles, this includes stand-up collars, jabots, and the shoulder line. To accentuate the extremities, ruffles are used to decorate sleeve cuffs or the hem of trousers. They are also used as contour trim along hemlines, buttonholes, or patch pockets.
What to combine with
When styling clothes with bold embellishments, balance the volumes. A full, ruffled blouse requires a minimalist cut throughout the rest of the outfit. Pair it with straight-leg jeans, sleek pleated trousers, or a tailored pencil skirt.

To tone down the overly romanticism, contrasting textures are used. Lightweight ruffled fabrics are paired with rougher materials like thick leather, denim, or chunky shoes. A classic example is pairing a chiffon blouse with a biker jacket.
This element can also be integrated into a business wardrobe. Micro-ruffles are used as a delicate trim on the collar or cuffs of a basic white shirt. This piece is worn under a classic structured jacket, leaving only a thin edge of the trim visible.
