What is a reticule?
Reticule — is a small, soft-shaped women's handbag on a short strap, chain, or cord, originally resembling a fabric bag or tobacco pouch.

The accessory appeared at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries during the Empire style. At this time, women's dresses became too thin and tight, leading to the complete disappearance of hidden internal pockets under skirts.
The original name is "reticulum" (from Latin reticulum — mesh) over time transformed into French ridicule (funny). Contemporaries found it amusing that women began carrying pockets in their hands. Historically, a handbag was intended for storing a handkerchief, smelling salts, coins, and a ball fan. In a modern wardrobe, a reticule serves as an accent or evening accessory.
Distinctive features
A classic reticule most often features a frame clasp with two metal ball latches. Soft models are also available, which are fastened at the top with a drawstring and a strong cord.

Traditionally, a bag has a soft base without a rigid bottom. Its silhouette resembles a teardrop, a voluminous pouch, or an inverted tulip. Historical models were made of velvet, silk, and tapestry and were lavishly decorated with beads, embroidery, and pearls. Modern versions are often made of smooth leather, thick suede, and satin.
A reticule's handle is always short. It can be a metal chain, a twisted silk cord, or a small, rigid, arched handle. Its design suggests carrying the bag exclusively in the hand or on the wrist.
What to combine with
Velvet or beaded handbags traditionally complement evening and cocktail attire. They pair perfectly with silk maxi slip dresses, tailored tuxedos, and stiletto pumps.

In a smart casual style, smooth leather handbags with metal clasps are paired with basic pieces. Straight-leg blue jeans, oversized wool jackets, and white shirts tone down the bag's dressiness, making it appropriate for daytime looks.

The accessory fits harmoniously into looks with a retro aesthetic. The reticule complements crisp tweed suits, A-line midi skirts, chiffon blouses with bows, and patent leather Mary Janes.
In minimalist outfits, a richly embellished handbag is used as the sole accent. It breaks up otherwise monochromatic, minimalist looks—for example, a strict black sheath dress or a solid-color, straight-cut pantsuit.
