What is a clutch?
Clutch (from the English clutch - to grab, to squeeze) is a small women's bag without handles and a long strap, which is traditionally carried in the hand or grasped with the palm.
Historically, this accessory emerged in the 1920s and 1930s as an addition to evening wear. It allowed one to carry powder and lipstick without overloading the delicate silhouette of a dress with bulky belts.
The main distinguishing feature of the classic model is its compact size and the need to hold the bag with the hand or under the arm. Modern clutches are often complemented by a thin, detachable chain, which expands their wearing options. Depending on the shape and material, this accessory can be formal for evening wear, casual wear, or business wear.
Main types
There are several basic forms of clutches, each of which has its own purpose in the wardrobe.
- Minaudière — an evening clutch with a rigid metal or plastic frame. Often richly decorated with rhinestones, beads, pearls, or enamel. It holds only the bare essentials: a phone, lipstick, and a bank card.
- Envelope clutch — a flat rectangular bag with a flap, visually reminiscent of a mailing envelope. Traditionally made of thick leather or suede, it holds its shape well.
- Oversized clutch (folder) — a large model that can accommodate A4 documents or a tablet. It's ideal for both business and smart-casual wardrobes.
- Clutch bag (pouch) — a voluminous, soft bag without a rigid frame, often with gathers at the clasp. It is distinguished by its spaciousness and relaxed appearance.
What to wear with a clutch
The choice of model directly depends on the style of clothing and the proportions of the figure.
Rigid minaudières and satin clutches pair well with tuxedos, cocktail dresses, and full-length gowns. Classic pumps or thin-strap sandals are the perfect footwear for such evening looks.
Structured envelope clutches and folders made of smooth matte leather complement a business style. They pair perfectly with pantsuits, pencil skirts, tailored shirts, and classic trench coats.
Soft, oversized clutch bags are perfect for everyday looks. They're paired with straight-leg jeans, oversized jackets, chunky knit sweaters, and flat shoes like loafers or mules.
When choosing a clutch, the rule of proportionality applies: the bag's dimensions should be in harmony with the proportions of the body. Petite women should choose smaller models, while taller women and those with curvier figures should choose medium and large clutches.
