What are stud earrings: types, fasteners, and combination rules

What are stud earrings?

Stud earrings (colloquially known as "studs") are earrings that attach directly to the earlobe and have no dangling decorative elements. Their design is extremely simple and consists of three basic components: a decorative front piece, a straight pin (rod) that passes through the piercing, and a retaining clasp hidden behind the earlobe.

This type of fastening creates the visual effect of jewelry that fits snugly against the skin. The clasp securely holds the post, allowing the decorative piece to appear to "float" on the earlobe without visible support. Studs are made of a variety of metals—from platinum and gold to basic jewelry alloys—making them a versatile piece.

Main types

Stud earrings are divided into three main categories based on their clasp type. Pin-and-bolt models feature a butterfly clasp that locks onto a smooth rod using friction. Screw-on studs have threads on the pin onto which the clasp is screwed, ensuring maximum security. Push-button models operate using a built-in spring mechanism.

The classic stud design features a single setting. This can be a prong-set diamond, a pearl, or a smooth metal hemisphere. Fancy and geometric studs feature more complex shapes, including clusters of multiple stones, brand logos, and miniature symbols.

A separate category are double-sided studs, popularized by the House of Dior. Their design features decorative elements on both sides: a small detail is positioned at the front, while a larger one (such as a massive pearl) protrudes from behind the earlobe.

How to wear

Minimalist stud earrings are considered the standard for a strict business dress code. Pearls up to 6-8 millimeters in diameter, small diamonds, or smooth metal studs don't distract from the conversation and complement office attire harmoniously.

In everyday looks, studs are actively used to create multi-layered sets (ear stacking) when multiple piercings are present. Jewelry is combined in order of size, moving up the lobe, or pieces of different geometric shapes are mixed.

The lack of dangling details makes studs secure and comfortable when wearing bulky scarves, turtlenecks, and elaborate collars. They don't snag on fabric and pair easily with chunky chain necklaces or statement brooches, maintaining a balanced proportion in the portrait area.
