What is a plastron?
Plastron necklace — is a massive, voluminous neck decoration that covers a significant portion of the décolleté and collarbone area, visually resembling a bib or a false collar.

Historically, the term derives from the French word "plastron" (breastplate). It originally referred to a piece of knightly armor designed to protect the chest during battle.
In men's wardrobes of the 19th and 20th centuries, a plastron was the heavily starched bib of a tailcoat shirt. It also referred to a wide men's tie, worn over the neckline of a vest and secured with a special tie pin.
In modern women's fashion, the term has become synonymous with the bib necklace. Its large size makes it perceived as a standalone piece of clothing rather than simply an accessory.
Distinctive features and materials
The main characteristic of a plastron necklace is its tight fit to the skin or fabric, as well as a wide coverage area from the base of the neck to the chest line.

Metal models are created from solid plates, large chain links, or complex geometric elements interconnected. Such jewelry is often found in collections inspired by architectural minimalism or futurism.
Fine jewelry and eveningwear pieces are encrusted with large crystals, semi-precious stones, pearls, or rhinestones. Such intricate embellishments are typical of fashion houses like Oscar de la Renta, Lanvin, and Marni.
Textile and ethnic varieties are made from thick leather, beads, or felt. Decorative elements include long fringe, intricate hand embroidery, wooden beads, and feathers.
What to wear with a plastron necklace
The basic rule of styling is that the plastron is the main accent of the look. The background clothing should be as simple as possible, without bold prints, ruffles, flounces, or complex cuts in the chest area.

When paired with a shirt, the necklace is worn over a classic white or denim shirt buttoned all the way up. The necklace is positioned just under the collar, visually mimicking a tie.
The plastron looks great with smooth knitwear. It's worn over a solid turtleneck, a basic crew neck sweater, or a crisp, minimalist T-shirt.

For evening wear, this necklace perfectly complements off-the-shoulder bustier dresses. It also pairs harmoniously with deep V-necklines or strict sheath dresses with boat necklines.
