What is a minaudière?
Minaudière (from French minaudière ) is a small women's evening bag on a rigid frame that functions as a piece of jewelry and holds only the bare minimum of things.

To better understand the minaudière in its historical context, we need to look back to 1930. The accessory was created by Charles Arpels, one of the founders of the jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels. The idea arose when Arpels saw socialite Florence Gould storing her cosmetics in a metal cigarette box. This inspired him to create a precious case for evening outings.
The first minaudières were made of gold and platinum, encrusted with precious stones. Inside were special compartments for a powder compact, lipstick, a tortoiseshell comb, and theater tickets.
Distinctive features
Unlike a classic soft clutch, a minaudière always has a hard shell that doesn't deform. The frame is made of metal, acrylic, wood, or hard plastic.

The accessory was originally designed to be carried in the hand and lacks traditional handles. Modern models often feature a thin chain that can be tucked inside if needed.
- Rich decor: the surface is richly decorated with crystals, pearls, enamel, mother-of-pearl, beads, or has a complex metallic texture.
- Non-standard geometry: In addition to classic rectangles and ovals, minaudières are also available in the shape of spheres, cubes, perfume bottles, animals, or shells.
- Latch lock: The bag closes with a tight mechanical lock, which is often a decorative element in itself.
What to combine with
According to the Black Tie dress code, a minaudière is a must-have for formal evening events. It complements floor-length dresses, silk slips, and tuxedos. For cocktail looks, the accessory is paired with velvet midi dresses, sequined outfits, or elegant evening jumpsuits.

In modern fashion, a richly embellished minaudière is used to elevate everyday pieces. Contrasting styling involves pairing a precious handbag with straight-leg jeans, a basic top, a tailored jacket, and pumps.

Since the minaudière visually functions as a large piece of jewelry, the accent rule applies. It is recommended to wear it with plain, simple-cut clothing, minimizing the amount of other chunky jewelry in the look.
