What are lunar rovers?

Lunar rovers (Moon boots) are voluminous, insulated winter footwear with a characteristic puffy silhouette, flat, massive soles and a wide shaft.

The design was developed in 1969 by Italian entrepreneur Giancarlo Zanatta, founder of the Moon Boot brand. He was inspired by the massive gear worn by the Apollo 11 astronauts who landed on the moon.

Initially, lunar boots were functional footwear for après-ski resorts. They were designed to provide warmth and rest for feet after removing the rigid plastic ski boots.

In the 2000s, moon boots moved beyond the ski slopes and became a popular staple in everyday winter wear. This was fueled by the global trend toward futurism and the increased demand for comfortable, utilitarian clothing.

Distinctive features

The classic, original moon boots don't have anatomical divisions between the right and left boot. The universal last adapts to the individual shape of the wearer's foot thanks to a special internal foam padding.

The outer layer is traditionally made of waterproof, smooth nylon or vinyl. These materials reliably protect feet from snow, wind, and moisture.

A recognizable design detail is the crisscross lacing. It encircles the shaft and foot, serving both a decorative and practical function—allowing for adjusting the boot's fit.

A thick rubber sole with a pronounced anti-slip tread, combined with a layer of polyurethane foam inside, provides excellent temperature regulation. This design helps retain heat even in extremely cold temperatures down to -35°C.

What to combine with

For après-ski wear, moon boots pair seamlessly with ski suits and insulated overalls. Fleece tracksuits and voluminous puffer jackets are ideal as outer layers.

For an urban casual look, wear moon boots with skinny jeans or thick knit leggings. The legs are always tucked into the wide shaft. Layer them with chunky knit sweaters or loose hoodies.

Among outerwear, cropped down jackets, aviator-style shearlings, or puffer vests are the best complements. Long, classic coats and elegant fur coats paired with such shoes create a strong stylistic clash, so it's best to avoid them.

Since moon boots visually add weight to the lower half of the figure, the look requires a balanced proportion. This can be achieved either with a fitted bottom for contrast, or by creating a completely relaxed, oversized silhouette, for example, with wide-leg knit joggers.
