What is a coquette in clothing?
Yoke A hem is a cut-off piece located at the top of a garment (at the neckline, on the shoulders) or at the waist and hips. Structurally, this element ensures a snug fit in key areas of the garment, such as the shoulder girdle or pelvis.
The use of a yoke allows the rest of the garment to flow freely, gather, or drape without losing the clarity of the silhouette. This element originally originated in the design of work and military uniforms. A double layer of fabric in the shoulder area was used to reinforce the structure and protect the garment from rapid wear and tear when carrying heavy loads.

The main types of coquettes
In clothing design, there are two main types of yokes: shoulder yokes and waist yokes. Shoulder yokes are used in shirts, blouses, trench coats, and dresses. In men's shirts, they are most often located on the back and doubled for added strength, while in women's blouses, they can also be located on the front.
Waist yokes, or skirt yokes, are used in the construction of trousers, jeans, and skirts. This detail replaces darts, creating a smooth fit across the stomach and hips, with the hemline beginning to flare or form pleats.

Yokes come in a variety of shapes: straight, V-shaped, oval, and pointed. The V-shaped cut is the standard for the back of classic jeans. Pointed lines are typical of Western-style shirts. As a decorative technique, yokes are often cut on the bias to create a contrasting geometric pattern on plaid fabrics or sewn from textured materials such as lace, leather, or dense mesh.

How to use yoke details
The shape and placement of the yoke directly influence the visual perception of figure proportions. A classic V-shaped yoke on the back of jeans visually lifts the buttocks. A wide, straight yoke on a skirt smooths the midriff and visually lengthens the torso.

Skirts with yokes (pleated or sun-cut) require a tucked-in top. To create a harmonious silhouette without excess bulk around the hips, choose thin turtlenecks, smooth basic T-shirts, or silk blouses.
Shirts and dresses with a contrasting shoulder yoke visually widen the shoulders. This technique is used to balance proportions in a pear-shaped figure. Shirts with a shaped cowboy-style yoke integrate into smart-casual looks when paired with straight-leg basic jeans or leather pants.
