What is a dart in clothing: types and cutting features

What is a dart?

Dart - is a structural element of clothing that is a sewn fold of fabric that tapers towards one or both ends.

The primary function of a dart is to transform a flat piece of fabric into a three-dimensional shape that follows the natural curves of the human body. Technically, this tailoring element consists of a cusp (the sharp point where the stitching tapers off) and two sides sewn together on the back of the garment.

The presence of darts distinguishes tailored fit clothing from flattering cuts, such as oversized or straight silhouettes. Unlike knitwear, which hugs the body thanks to the elasticity of the material itself, woven fabrics require darts to create an anatomically correct fit.

Main types of darts

Bust darts are located on the front of a garment. They can start from the side seam, armhole, or shoulder and always point toward the center of the chest, creating the necessary volume for the bust.

Waist darts are vertical folds found on skirts, trousers, dresses, and dress shirts. They remove excess fabric from the waist, creating a smooth transition to the hips or chest.

French darts are diagonal lines that start at the waistline on the side seam and extend toward the center of the chest. This cut combines the functions of a waist and bust dart, creating an elegant drape without unnecessary seams on the front.

Shoulder and elbow darts are used in the construction of outerwear, classic jackets, and blazers. They ensure a precise fit along the curve of the back and comfortable sleeve bending without straining the fabric.

How to use darts when choosing clothes

Darted garments, such as sheath dresses, pencil skirts, or fitted jackets, create a rigid, structured silhouette. Choosing such garments requires a precise fit that perfectly matches the body's contours.

When purchasing ready-to-wear clothing, it's important to pay attention to the placement of the bust dart. Its peak should point directly to the fullest point of the bust, but be 1.5–2 centimeters short of it. If the dart is positioned higher or lower than this point, the garment is tailored for a different height.

Waist darts on the back of trousers or dresses are the easiest element to adjust in a tailor's shop. Deepening them helps eliminate looseness at the waist, which is especially important when there's a large difference between your waist and hip measurements.

Clothing with multiple darts, such as corset tops, visually sculpts the figure. This cut creates a rigid frame and emphasizes a narrow waist, even without pronounced natural curves.
