What is a cloche hat?

Cloche — is a women's hat shaped like a bell and fitting tightly around the head. The name of the accessory comes from the French word cloche , which means "bell" in translation.

The hat was created in 1908 by French milliner Caroline Reboud and subsequently became one of the key symbols of women's fashion in the 1920s. The popularity of this headdress is inextricably linked with the Jazz Age, emancipation, and the flapper style.

The cloche hat harmoniously complemented the short, sleek haircuts popular at the time, such as bobs and bobs, emphasizing the fragility of the female silhouette.

Distinctive features

The geometric shape of a cloche hat includes a deep, rounded crown that precisely follows the contours of the head. The brim of these hats is very narrow and can be either slanted downwards, creating a closed silhouette, or slightly upturned.

The specific fit of the hat requires it to be worn deep on the head. Traditionally, the hat was worn low on the forehead, reaching almost to the eyebrow line, which forced women of the 1920s to tilt their heads back slightly when walking.

Classic winter and mid-season models are made of dense wool felt, which holds its shape well and protects against wind. Summer versions are woven from stiff straw or sewn from lightweight, shape-resistant fabrics.

Cloche hats are decorated in a minimalist style, so as not to disrupt the strict geometric lines of the hat. Most often, the decoration consists of a narrow grosgrain ribbon around the base of the crown, a small metal brooch, a flat bow, or simple embroidery on the side.

What to combine with

As outerwear, the cloche hat perfectly complements classic straight-cut wool coats. It also looks great with tailored double-breasted trench coats and fitted jackets in heavy fabrics, evoking vintage aesthetics.

In everyday wardrobe, the accessory harmoniously combines with wide palazzo trousers made of suit wool, thin basic turtlenecks and straight or A-line midi-length dresses.

For footwear and accessories, consider pumps, leather ankle boots with a sturdy heel, and classic, smooth gloves. Bags are best in a more rigid style—for example, a vintage satchel, a baguette, or a structured crossbody.

When styling, it's important to maintain proportions. Since a cloche hat visually reduces head size due to its tight fit, it's recommended to avoid overly bulky, chunky knit scarves and massive fur collars. A minimalist headband will help maintain the proper balance of the silhouette.
