What is a hood?
Bonnet — is a women's headdress that combines the functions of a hat and a scarf, which covers the head, ears and neck.

Historically, this accessory emerged in the 19th century as a hat with a high crown and wide brim framing the face. The classic model of the time was secured under the chin with wide silk or velvet ribbons.
The modern version features a separate, detachable hood that can be pulled over the head or fastened in the front. The main difference between a modern hood and a balaclava is its looser fit: it doesn't cling tightly to the face, allowing for a more comfortable hairstyle and enhanced wearability.
Main types
Knitted bonnets are made from wool, cashmere, angora, or blended yarns. These models often feature a drawstring at the front opening for a snug fit.

Puffer and quilted options are made from water-repellent jacket fabric with down or synthetic padding for insulation. Visually, they resemble the detachable hood of a down jacket and are designed to protect against wet snow and wind.
A hooded bib is an elongated style, the lower part of which covers the chest and upper back. This style is worn directly under outerwear to create an additional layer of warmth without adding bulk around the neck.
Sportswear styles are made from thick fleece or technical knitwear. They feature a simple cut, lack of decorative details, and are used primarily for winter sports and outdoor activities.
What to combine with
A smooth knit or cashmere hood in a basic shade (beige, gray, black) complements a classic wool coat perfectly. This accessory softens the formality of a strict silhouette, making a casual look more relaxed.

Puffer hoods or voluminous textured knits are paired with oversized down jackets, aviator jackets, and parkas. This combination maintains the overall geometry and proportions of winter outerwear.
In layered looks, a thin knitted bonnet successfully replaces a voluminous scarf. In early spring or fall, it's worn under a cotton trench coat, a leather biker jacket, or a thick wool jacket.

When choosing a color scheme, an accessory can be matched to the outerwear to create a cohesive, minimalist silhouette. An alternative approach is to use a hood in a bright, contrasting shade as the main accent detail against a monochrome outfit.
