Cabochon: What is it in fashion and jewelry?

Emily Thompson 3 min read

What is a cabochon?

Cabochon — is a method of processing precious, semi-precious ornamental stones, or glass, which gives the mineral a smooth, convex, faceted surface and a flat base. To fully understand the term cabochon (what it is and where the name comes from), it's worth turning to the French language: the word is derived from caboche , which translates as "head" or "nail head."

Unlike a facet cut, which consists of multiple flat facets to reflect light, a cabochon does not sparkle. Its main purpose is to showcase the depth of color, natural pattern, or inner glow of the mineral.

In the fashion industry, this term is applied not only to jewelry. Cabochons are smooth, hemispherical decorative elements made of plastic, enamel, or resin, used for embroidery and creating three-dimensional appliqués on clothing.

Distinctive features and types

A classic cabochon is a perfect oval or round shape with a smooth dome. Jewelers also create teardrop-shaped, square, polygonal, and asymmetrical variations depending on the mineral's natural structure.

The stone's profile varies: the dome can be high (convex), medium, or flat. There are also double cabochons, convex on both sides, and concave ones. The latter type is used for very dark minerals to thin the stone and allow light to pass through.

Opaque or translucent ornamental stones are traditionally cut into cabochons. These include turquoise, malachite, onyx, agate, amber, and jade. This type of cut maximizes the minerals' optical effects, including asterism (the star effect in sapphires and rubies), iridescence (the rainbow glow in moonstone and opal), and the "cat's eye" effect.

How to use in images

Chunky cocktail rings and pendants with large turquoise or amber cabochons serve as the centerpiece of boho or ethnic looks. Brooches, clips, and chokers with smooth stones framed in aged metal or pearls add a retro feel and vintage aesthetic.

In haute couture, glass and plastic cabochons are widely used to embellish evening dresses, jackets, and bags. The smooth hemispheres create a three-dimensional texture in the Byzantine or Baroque style, often seen in the collections of fashion houses Chanel and Schiaparelli.

The smooth, lollipop-like surface of cabochons contrasts beautifully with dense, matte materials. Jewelry with this stone finish is recommended for wearing over velvet, classic tweed, heavy silk, or chunky wool sweaters.
