What is grunge style?
Grunge — is a fashion trend that emerged in the early 1990s as a protest against the glamour and excessive luxury of the previous decade, characterized by deliberate casualness and a worn-out effect.
The style originated in the Seattle music subculture. Members of rock bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam wore comfortable, cheap, thrift-store clothing, which quickly became the uniform for alternative music fans.
Designer Marc Jacobs brought grunge into high fashion. His controversial 1992 spring/summer collection for Perry Ellis brought the fringe aesthetic to the runway, making plaid shirts and floral dresses an official fashion trend.

Distinctive features
The style is based on textured, visually distressed materials. Checkered flannel, ripped and distressed denim, stretched knits, distressed leather, and coarse cotton predominate.

Key wardrobe items include oversized chunky-knit cardigans, silk slip dresses, and rock band logo T-shirts. Baggy jeans, chunky lace-up boots, or canvas sneakers complete the look.
The styling principles revolve around layering, oversize pieces, and asymmetry. Characteristic features include long-sleeved T-shirts worn under a T-shirt, raw edges, and a dark, muted color palette consisting of black, gray, khaki, and burgundy.
How to wear
Modern grunge (neo-grunge) is built on contrast: casual elements are mixed with basic or classic pieces. This approach helps avoid the carnival costume effect and adapts the style to everyday life.

A classic combination of contrasting textures is a lightweight silk slip dress paired with heavy combat boots. A voluminous sweater with dropped stitches is often worn over the dress.

For a more understated look, use accents. Adding just one grunge-inspired detail is enough: tie a flannel shirt around your hips with straight-leg jeans, or wear a vintage printed tee with a tailored jacket.
