What is a flannel shirt?

Flannel shirt — is a wardrobe item made from soft, pile fabric (flannel), which is made from cotton, wool, or blended fibers.

Фланелевая рубашка - 1
Classic flannel texture with a distinctive brushed finish and checkered pattern.

The fabric's main technical feature is the brushed finish on one or both sides. This brushed finish is created during production and provides the material with high thermal insulation and a distinctive tactile softness.

Historically, the garment originated in Wales in the 17th century as functional workwear for farmers, protecting them from dampness and biting winds. In the 20th century, it became associated with the uniforms of lumberjacks and factory workers in the United States, and in the 1990s, thanks to the popularity of alternative rock music, it became a key element of the grunge subculture.

Distinctive features

Most flannel shirts are plaid. The most common geometric patterns are Scottish tartan, Vichy, and large two-tone buffalo plaid.

In addition to plaid options, brands also produce solid-color basics. The traditional cut remains straight or slightly oversized, allowing you to wear it over other clothing without restricting your movement.

The classic design features a turn-down collar, long sleeves with buttoned cuffs, a full-length placket, and one or two patch pockets on the chest. The fabric always has a matte finish, retaining heat well while remaining breathable thanks to its natural base.

What to combine with

For everyday basics, a flannel shirt is often worn unbuttoned over a white T-shirt or ribbed tank top. This top is paired with straight-leg jeans and chunky leather boots (like Dr. Martens) or classic sneakers.

A casual layered look with an unbuttoned shirt and a basic tee.

This piece works great in layered outfits as a midlayer. Wear it under a voluminous denim jacket, a leather biker jacket, a thick cardigan, or a puffer vest.

Using a shirt as an accent accessory on the hips in a grunge style.

In the grunge style, the piece is often knotted at the hips over jeans or thick leggings as a statement accessory. For an eclectic urban look, thick flannel is paired with contrasting textures: a tucked-in shirt pairs harmoniously with classic high-waisted wide-leg trousers or a sleek silk slip skirt.
