What is a phalangeal ring?
Phalanx ring — is a piece of jewelry or costume jewelry designed to be worn on the middle or upper phalanx of a finger, above the lower joint. In international terminology, such items are often referred to as midi rings , tea rings or knuckle rings.

Historically, jewelry on the upper phalanges was worn in Ancient Egypt and during the Renaissance. It served as a symbol of aristocratic status, as wearing such jewelry while simultaneously performing heavy manual labor was physically impossible.
The return of these jewelry pieces to modern fashion occurred in the early 2010s. The trend was set by Nicolas Ghesquière's collections for Balenciaga and Karl Lagerfeld's for Chanel, after which phalanx rings became a staple in everyday jewelry wardrobes.
Main types
There are several basic designs that are adapted to the anatomy of the upper finger.

- Midi rings: thin, minimalist headbands designed exclusively for the middle phalanx. They are often available without stones or with micro-inserts for comfortable everyday wear.
- Long rings: massive structures covering the entire finger or both phalanges. To maintain hand mobility, they are equipped with internal hinges, allowing the finger to bend freely.

- Open models: rings with a slight gap in the circumference. This design allows for slight adjustment of the ring's diameter, ensuring a secure fit on the narrowing part of the finger.
- Chain-linked rings A set of two headbands connected by a thin, flexible chain. One element is worn at the base of the finger, the other on the top phalanx.
How to wear
Choosing the right size is crucial for comfortable wear. A knuckle ring is typically two to three sizes smaller than a standard band for the same finger. The ring should fit snugly enough to prevent it from slipping off when you swing your hand quickly, but without leaving marks on your skin or interfering with circulation.

Phalanx rings are rarely worn singly. A classic stylistic technique involves pairing a massive ring at the base of one finger with several thin midi rings on adjacent fingers. The jewelry is distributed asymmetrically, creating a visual dynamic on the hand.
Placing the jewelry close to the nail plate maximizes attention on the hands. Wearing fingernail rings requires well-groomed cuticles. They look most harmonious with a single-color nail polish—deep dark shades or minimalist nudes.
