What is eclecticism?
Eclecticism in clothing — is a stylistic direction based on the intentional and harmonious combination of elements from different eras, cultures, textures, and opposing styles in a single image.
The term derives from the Greek word for "chooser" and was originally used in architecture and philosophy. In fashion, eclecticism emerged as a distinct phenomenon in the 1970s, thanks to the hippie subculture and boho style, and later became firmly established in the postmodern era.

The main difference between eclecticism and kitsch or stylistic error is the presence of a well-thought-out unifying idea. Contrasting pieces are always united by a common denominator: color, shape, proportion, or overall mood.
Distinctive features
The main technique of eclecticism is the combination of materials with contrasting visual and tactile properties. A single outfit might feature light, flowing silk and rough leather, thick English tweed and translucent lace, or chunky wool knitwear with glittering sequins.
The trend embraces a fusion of polarizing styles. This manifests itself in the integration of sporty elements into a classic wardrobe, for example, pairing a tailored pantsuit with chunky sneakers. Also popular is a mix of grunge and romance, such as pairing a chiffon dress with a small floral print with heavy combat boots.

Eclectic style allows for the simultaneous use of geometric and flowing patterns. A crisp check can be combined with a floral print, and a nautical stripe with a leopard print, provided their color temperature matches.
Complex layering is another signature style. It's achieved through unconventional clothing combinations: a dress worn over trousers, and a thick turtleneck used as the underlayer for an evening slip dress.
How to wear
The most reliable way to tie together different prints and textures is to use a common color scheme. For example, the burgundy stripe on a sporty bomber jacket should complement the burgundy background of a romantic skirt, creating visual unity.

To create a harmonious, eclectic look, it's recommended to use one or two basic pieces in a neutral cut. A white shirt, straight-leg blue jeans, or a classic trench coat provide a calm backdrop against which intricate accent pieces shine.
When combining incompatible elements, it's important to balance the volumes. If a complex, layered, and colorful top is used, the lower half of the silhouette should remain simple and monochromatic.

A safe way to start eclecticism is by playing with accessories. A classic strand of pearls is paired with a basic cotton T-shirt and a biker jacket, while a vintage brooch with large crystals is pinned to the lapel of a casual denim jacket.
