What are ankle boots?
Ankle boots — This is a women's footwear that falls somewhere between a dress shoe and a half-boot, covering the ankle but not reaching the calf. The key characteristic of this footwear is the length of the shaft: it ends exactly at ankle level.

The term is derived from the French word bottillon (little boot). Historically, the modern silhouette was popularized in the mid-20th century, when designer Roger Vivier created shortened boots for Queen Elizabeth II.
The key design feature of classic models is a snug ankle fit and the obligatory presence of a heel or wedge. Modern interpretations allow for flat soles.
Main types
The design of ankle boots varies depending on the shape of the last, the type of heel and the materials.
- By the shape of the cape: A pointed toe visually elongates the silhouette of the foot, a square toe evokes the retro style of the 1990s, and a round toe is considered a basic everyday option.
- By heel type: Models are available with a classic stiletto heel, a stable block heel (square or beveled), and a micro-heel ( kitten heel ) and a massive tractor sole.

- By material and cut: Smooth leather, suede, and patent leather are used for sewing. A separate category is made up of ankle boots ( sock boots ) made of elastic textile or thin leather, tightly fitting the leg.
- By type of fastener: The shoes are secured with a side or back zipper, Victorian-style lacing, or elastic inserts on the sides.

What to combine with
When styling ankle boots, it's important to pay attention to how the edge of the shoe connects with your clothing.
Cropped, straight-leg or wide-leg silhouettes look best with trousers and jeans. The hem of the pant leg should barely touch the shaft or leave a narrow strip of skin. Fitted ankle boots are worn under full-length, wide-leg trousers.

Midi lengths are ideal for pairing with skirts and dresses. The hem should overlap the edge of the shoe or leave a minimal gap. Miniskirts are complemented by models with a stable heel or flats.
To visually lengthen your legs, choose thick tights or trousers that match your shoes. Black tights paired with black suede ankle boots create a continuous vertical line, elongating the silhouette.
Pairing ankle boots that are wide at the ankle with knee-length skirts is considered a style mistake, as it visually shortens the leg. Tucking skinny jeans into tight-fitting styles is also not recommended.
