What is business casual?

Business casual Business casual is a dress code that combines elements of a traditional business wardrobe with relaxed casual attire. The key to understanding the concept of business casual is finding the right balance between professionalism and comfort.

The style originated in the 1990s in the US corporate environment. It was based on the "Casual Friday" concept, when employees were allowed to come to the office without formal suits.

The main goal of this dress code is to create an image that looks respectable enough for office work and client meetings, but does not require wearing a classic, formal two-piece suit.

Distinctive features

The foundation of the style is a rejection of strict formality. Business casual eliminates the need to wear matching suits, ties, or stiff, starched collars.

The wardrobe utilizes high-quality fabrics that hold their shape well: dense cotton, wool, cashmere, silk, linen, and heavy knits. Sheer materials, shiny textures, and thin, shapeless knits, which visually cheapen the look, are avoided.

A classic feminine look: beige chinos, a light blue shirt, a navy blazer and leather loafers.

The color palette remains subdued. Neutral shades serve as the base: navy blue, gray, beige, black, and white. These are complemented by muted accents of burgundy, olive, and mustard.

Only closed-toe shoes are permitted. Preference is given to loafers, oxfords, brogues, elegant ballet flats, and shoes with a sturdy heel. Athletic sneakers and open summer sandals are excluded from this dress code.

How to wear

Basic combinations revolve around chinos or classic straight-leg trousers. They're paired with button-down shirts, silk blouses, or high-quality smooth wool turtlenecks.

Layering is key. Layer a mismatched jacket (blazer), a thick-knit cardigan, or a V-neck jumper over the shirt. This completes the look and allows for easy adaptation to the room temperature.

Dresses and skirts are also integrated into business casual. Sheath dresses, A-line skirts, or pencil skirts in midi or knee-length are common, often paired with a tailored jacket.

A modern take on the dress code: straight dark jeans, a silk blouse, a beige jacket, and leather ankle boots.

Accessories are kept simple. Minimal jewelry and a structured leather tote or briefcase are acceptable. A leather belt should traditionally match the shoes.
