What is a pleated skirt?
Pleated skirt (from French plissée — folded) is a wardrobe item made from fabric with artificially created folds parallel to each other.
The garment's key feature is the presence of pressed or heat-set pleats of uniform width along its entire length. When stationary, the fabric lies flat, creating a straight silhouette. When in motion, the pleats open, providing freedom of movement and dynamism.

Historically, the technique of fine pleating was patented by Mariano Fortuny in the early 20th century, which was reflected in his famous Delphos dress. Pleated skirts became firmly established in modern everyday wardrobes in the 1920s and 1950s.
Main types
Pleated skirts are classified by length, materials used, and the type of pleat used.
- By length: midi (a versatile option that covers the knee), maxi (evening or summer flowing models) and mini (short tennis skirts with wide pleats).
- Based on the material: Lightweight fabrics (chiffon, silk, crepe) create a flowing silhouette. Dense materials (wool, tweed, suiting) are used for winter wardrobes. Textured fabrics, such as faux leather, metallic threads, or velvet, are used for accent looks.
- By fold type: Classic pleats involve folds of equal width, all in the same direction. Goffered pleats are characterized by folds that widen at the bottom and stand up like a "house." Box pleats are wide, inverted folds of fabric.

What to combine with
The styling of a pleated skirt is most often based on the contrast of volumes and textures.
Casual A lightweight pleated skirt pairs well with a chunky knit sweater, a hoodie, or a heavy denim jacket. Chunky sneakers or chunky leather lace-up boots complement this outfit.

In a business wardrobe A midi-length model is paired with a structured jacket. The waist can be accentuated with a wide belt over the jacket. A basic turtleneck or silk blouse is used as the first layer. Shoes include classic pumps, loafers, or tube boots, the shaft of which extends under the hem of the skirt.

In evening looks Skirts made of metallic fabric, satin, or velvet are complemented by a lingerie-style top, a lace blouse, or an asymmetrical bodysuit. Elegant sandals with thin straps or stiletto heels complete the look.
