What is a tote bag?
Tote bag (from English) tote — to carry, to transfer) is a roomy bag of simple geometric shape with two parallel handles.

The design dates back to the 1940s. The first such models, made of durable canvas, were produced by the American brand LL Bean and were intended for carrying ice.
The key design feature is a single, spacious main compartment and an open top. Modern iterations often feature a magnetic snap or zipper closure. The handles are medium-length, allowing the bag to be carried either by hand or over the shoulder.
Main types
- Classic (canvas) tote: A soft-shaped model made of thick cotton or canvas. Often used as an eco-friendly shopping bag or beach accessory.
- Structured Leather Tote: A bag with a rigid bottom and a clear geometry (rectangle, square, or trapezoid). The material holds its shape well even when empty.
- Mini tote: A scaled-down version of the classic silhouette. It retains two short handles, but is often paired with a long strap for crossbody wear.
- Soft leather tote (shopper): A frameless model made of suede or fine leather. It easily conforms to the contents and offers maximum capacity.

What to combine with
A business-style tote bag made of smooth leather in basic shades (black, burgundy, caramel) is perfect for a rigid, structured look. This style pairs well with pantsuits, tailored coats, and pencil skirts. The rigid frame is convenient for carrying a laptop and A4 documents.

A soft suede tote is perfect for smart casual looks. It complements straight-leg jeans, leather loafers, a basic turtleneck, and an oversized jacket.
Textile and canvas pieces pair well with summer dresses, denim, sneakers, and trench coats. This creates an easy, casual, and effortless look.
