What is preppy style?
Preppy style is a fashion trend that originated from the uniforms worn by students at elite private preparatory schools and Ivy League students in the United States.
Historically, the style emerged in the 1940s and 1950s as a reflection of the lifestyle of affluent American youth, who enjoyed sailing, golf, tennis, and polo. The aesthetic was rooted in exclusive club traditions and a strict dress code.

In the 1980s, the trend expanded beyond college campuses. Thanks to collections from brands like Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Lacoste, preppy style became a symbol of a classy yet relaxed everyday wardrobe accessible to a wider audience.
Distinctive features
Fabrics. Only natural, dense materials with excellent shape retention are used. The wardrobe staples include cotton pique, oxford, heavy tweed, cashmere, and merino wool.
Color palette and prints. The basic colors are navy, burgundy, emerald, mustard, and beige. Characteristic patterns include tartan, argyle, wide stripes, and houndstooth.

Key elements of clothing. The base consists of Oxford shirts, polo shirts, and V-neck sweaters. Club blazers with metal buttons and emblems, chinos, and pleated skirts are considered signature pieces.
Shoes. Preference is given to flat, slip-on styles or those with classic perforations. These include penny loafers, topsiders, oxfords, brogues, and minimalist white sneakers.
How to wear
Multilayered. A classic preppy look is a peplum shirt worn under a jumper, with a structured blazer or classic trench coat over it.

Modern styling (neo-preppy). Traditional elements are combined with voluminous silhouettes. For example, an oversized jacket is paired with a classic polo, and chunky loafers with thick soles are complemented with high white socks.
Accessories. The look is completed with minimalist details: leather belts, silk scarves, headbands, structured tote bags, and classic jewelry like a strand of pearls.
Sports integration. Cable-knit jumpers are often worn casually, draped over the shoulders and tied at the sleeves over a basic shirt or dress.
