What is pata?

Pata — is a functional or decorative piece of clothing in the form of a strip of fabric, one end of which is sewn into a seam, and the free end is fastened with a button, snap or buckle.

Пата - 1
A placket on the sleeve of a classic beige trench coat with a horn button and a small buckle.

Historically, this element originated from military uniforms and classic outerwear like trench coats. Initially, tabs were used to secure ammunition, attach insignia, or provide protection from the wind.

In modern clothing design, a pata is a detail that serves a dual purpose. It serves as a stylistic accent, adding structure to a garment, while also allowing for adjustment of volume or length.

Main types of pathologies

Depending on their location on the product, patches are divided into several functional types:

  • On the sleeves: They are located at the cuffs to tighten the sleeve edges and protect from the wind. They are also found on the forearm to secure rolled-up sleeves, which is typical of safari style and summer shirts.
  • Shoulder straps: They are sewn into the shoulder seam and fastened at the collar. They are a classic element of trench coats, jackets, and military-style jackets.
Пата - 2

  • At the waist: Side or back tabs on jackets, coats, and dress pants. They are used in place of a belt to create a tailored silhouette and fine-tune the fit.
  • On the collar: Functional details on outerwear that allow the raised collar to be fastened tightly for additional protection from the cold.

How to use in wardrobe

In outerwear, classic trench coats with scalloped sleeves and shoulders create a gathered, architectural silhouette. Tightening the scalloped cuff creates a voluminous puff sleeve, adding dynamism to the look.

Пата - 3
Linen safari shirt with rolled up sleeves secured with tabs.

In casual styles, shirts and shirtdresses with hidden gussets are often used to maintain sleeve length. This is a practical solution for creating a relaxed look in hot weather.

Пата - 4
Gray wool trousers with side slits at the waist instead of classic belt loops.

Classic trousers with side adjusters at the waist are popular in business attire. This design eliminates the need for a belt, creating a clean, minimalist waistline. These trousers look great with tucked-in silk blouses or tailored shirts.
