What is a drawstring in clothing: types, functions, and applications

What is a drawstring?

Drawstring — is a structural detail of clothing in the form of a stitched strip of fabric (a groove or tunnel), inside which a cord, elastic band or ribbon is pulled.

The main function of this element is to draw and gather the material to adjust the volume and fit of the garment. When considering what a drawstring is, it's important to note its difference from a regular belt: it's sewn directly into the garment, allowing for even distribution of the fabric folds and securing them in the desired position.

Initially used primarily in sportswear and workwear for wind protection, the drawstring later found its way into everyday and romantic wardrobes, becoming not only a utilitarian but also a decorative detail.

Main types and location

Based on their construction method, drawstrings are classified as hidden (stitched on the inside) and external (sewn onto the garment, often serving a decorative function). Depending on their location, they serve different design purposes:

  • Belt: They are located at the waistline. They are often found in parkas, shirt dresses, sweatpants, and shorts, allowing you to change the silhouette from straight to fitted.
  • At the bottom of the product: They are sewn into the hems of jackets, windbreakers, hoodies and sweatshirts to create volume (the “balloon” effect) and protect from cold air.

  • On collars and hoods: used in outerwear and sweatshirts to provide a snug fit around the neck and face.
  • On the sleeves and legs: They allow you to transform the length and shape. They transform straight trousers into joggers, and long straight sleeves into a gathered puff sleeve.

How to use in wardrobe

A drawstring waist is a convenient tool for adjusting proportions. On voluminous jackets and dresses, it helps define the waist without the use of rigid belts, maintaining a relaxed look.

Parachute or cargo pants with ankle drawstrings can be worn two ways. A cinched drawstring creates a sporty silhouette perfect for pairing with sneakers. Undoing the drawstring creates wide, straight legs perfect for layering with chunky boots.

Drawstrings, especially those with soft elastic, are ideal for long trips and flights. They don't constrict the body and easily adjust to changes in volume throughout the day.

In a romantic style, dresses and blouses with a drawstring at the neckline (for example, in the "Carmen" style) allow you to adjust the depth of the neckline and expose the shoulders, changing the degree of openness of the outfit.
