What is grunge style?
Grunge style in clothing — is a fashion trend that emerged in the late 1980s and early 1990s in Seattle as a visual reflection of the alternative rock subgenre of the same name, which included bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden.
At the core of grunge's philosophy is a protest against glamour, luxury, and generally accepted standards of neatness. This protest is expressed through a deliberately casual, "anti-fashion" aesthetic that mimics secondhand clothing.

Grunge's transition from music subculture to high fashion occurred in 1992 thanks to designer Marc Jacobs. He created a landmark collection for Perry Ellis, bringing the street's marginal casualness to the runway for the first time.
Distinctive features
The style is based on layering and combining seemingly incompatible pieces. A signature look is layering a long-sleeved top under a flannel shirt, topped with a voluminous cardigan or jacket.

Deconstruction and the visual wear of items play a significant role. The wardrobe features ripped jeans, raw edges, dropped stitches in knitwear, distressing, and a faded effect.
The silhouettes are built on an oversized foundation: garments appear several sizes too big, completely concealing the natural contours of the figure. Plaid flannel, heavy washed denim, rough leather, stretched cotton, and chunky yarns predominate among the materials.
The grunge color palette excludes neon and pure bright colors. Dark, muted, and dusty shades predominate: black, gray, khaki, burgundy, and faded blue.
How to wear
A modern adaptation of this style, known as neo-grunge, involves using one or two distinctive elements paired with basic pieces. This avoids the costume effect and makes the style suitable for everyday wear.

A classic women's slip includes a voluminous plaid shirt worn open or tied at the waist over a slip dress. The look is completed with chunky shoes, creating a contrast of light and heavy textures.
The footwear used is chunky lace-up boots (for example, classic Dr. Martens), worn sneakers made of thick canvas, or rough boots with wide shafts.

Grunge accessories are minimalist yet rugged. Metal chains, chokers, leather belts with metal eyelets, round sunglasses, and oversized knit beanies complete the look.
