What is an oversized shirt: cut and style features

What is an oversized shirt?

Oversized shirt — is a wardrobe item that is intentionally cut with exaggerated proportions to create a loose, voluminous silhouette.

The main difference between this garment and a shirt several sizes larger is the correct fit. The collar and cuffs remain proportionate to the figure, and the extra volume is added only in certain areas.

Рубашка-оверсайз - 1
Oversized shirt design with dropped shoulder seam and wide sleeves.

Historically, this silhouette was borrowed from men's clothing. In women's fashion, it has been adapted to create a contrast between the fragility of the body and the rough cut of clothing.

The garment is primarily made from dense fabrics such as cotton, linen, or poplin, which hold their shape well. Variants made from flowing materials (silk, viscose) are also available for a softer, smoother flow.

Distinctive features

The architecture of the oversized shirt is based on several design features that ensure a proper fit.

  • Dropped shoulder line: The shoulder seam is located significantly below the natural line of the shoulder, extending onto the forearm.
  • Wide sleeves: The increased volume is distributed along the entire length of the sleeve, often with an extension, but ends with a standard cuff.
  • Long cut: The hem usually covers the hips, has a straight or rounded cut, and is sometimes complemented by an elongated back.
  • Freedom of fit: significant excess fabric in the chest and waist area with a complete absence of darts and a fitted waist.

What to combine with

When styling an oversized shirt, balance of volume is key. Traditionally, a wide top is paired with narrower bottoms: straight jeans, leggings, a pencil skirt, or bike shorts.

Рубашка-оверсайз - 3
An oversized silk shirt with stripes that shows off the soft fall of the fabric.

This item is often used in layered looks as a top layer, replacing a lightweight jacket. It's worn open over a crop top, basic tee, ribbed tank top, or thin turtleneck.

To define the waistline and prevent a shapeless effect, a partial tuck-in technique is used. The shirt is tucked only in the front (French tuck-in) or only one side is secured with a belt.

Рубашка-оверсайз - 4
Layered look: unbuttoned white shirt over a crop top and straight jeans.

Pairing them with wide-leg pants, such as palazzo trousers, is also acceptable. In this case, the shirt is tucked in completely, and the waist is further accentuated with a belt.
