What are phalangeal rings?
Phalanx rings (also known as midi rings or knuckle rings) are pieces of jewelry or costume jewelry designed to be worn on the middle or top phalanx of a finger.

Historically, such jewelry was used in Ancient Egypt and during the Renaissance as a symbol of high social status, demonstrating a lack of need for heavy manual labor. The main technical feature of such rings is their reduced diameter (usually 12 to 15 millimeters), allowing the piece to fit snugly over the knuckle.
In modern fashion, this trend was revived on a large scale in the 2010s thanks to the collections of fashion houses Balenciaga and Chanel.
Main types
There are several basic configurations of phalangeal rings, which differ in their location on the finger and design:
- Midi rings — worn on the middle phalanx. They come in the form of basic, smooth bands or minimalist rings with small stones and geometric elements.
- Long rings — composite hinged structures covering two or three phalanges. They bend freely with the finger and are often designed in grunge or gothic styles.

- Tip rings — miniature decorations placed at the very base of the nail. Sometimes complemented by metal caps on the nail plate.
- Linked rings — sets of a classic ring for the lower phalanx and a midi ring, connected by thin metal chains.

How to wear
Fingernail jewelry draws maximum attention to the hands, so it requires a neat manicure. A nude or solid-color polish without a complex design is the perfect complement.

To create a harmonious composition, thin midi rings are combined with classic rings on the lower phalanx of the same or adjacent fingers, maintaining a consistent metal color. In casual style, one or two thin strand rings are typically used. In boho style, a multi-layered arrangement of rings of varying widths is acceptable on all fingers.
Full-finger hinged rings are statement pieces. They are worn solo, without the addition of other large pieces on the same hand.
