When my client Anna, the CEO of a successful fintech startup, came to see me in her 34th week of pregnancy, she threw her bag on a chair and said, "Isabella, I have a pitch to investors in a week, and I look like a giant marshmallow. I'm losing my credibility." And I understand her perfectly. The question, What to wear in the 3rd trimester , often comes down to a dreary choice between your husband's oversized hoodie and the maternity section's floral print dresses that instantly strip you of your individuality.

But the last few months before giving birth aren't a reason to put your style on hold. It's time for an architectural approach to your wardrobe. We've covered the basic principles of creating such looks in more detail in our complete guide: A capsule wardrobe for pregnant women: style and comfort while expecting a baby And today we'll talk heavy artillery: how to use premium knitwear, bias cuts, and clever layering to maintain status and aesthetics when your body changes every day.
What to Wear in the Third Trimester: Why You Should Ditch the Classic Maternity Clothes
Let's be honest: 80% of specialized mass-market maternity clothes are made using patterns that distort the female figure. The main pitfall is the empire-line silhouette (a dress with a cut-off waist and gathers). By the eighth or ninth month, this design transforms you into a monolithic tent, completely obliterating the body's geometry.
Over 12 years of working as a stylist, I've developed a firm rule: invest not in maternity clothes, but in high-quality oversized and premium knitwear from regular brands. Why spend €80-€150 on something with weird ruffles that you'll hate and throw away in two months? It's much wiser to buy a voluminous cashmere sweater or a men's-cut shirt from COS or Massimo Dutti, which will fit luxuriously into your wardrobe even after giving birth.

In later stages, our goal is not to hide the belly (that's impossible anyway), but to frame it gracefully. The "loose + tight" principle works brilliantly here. Here are three of my favorite formulas I use with my clients.
Co-ords: Elegance without the pressure
Formula: A midi skirt made of thick ribbed knitwear (under the belly) + a loose jumper with a V-neck.
Why does it work? Ribbed knitwear (also known as "noodles") works like an accordion—it adapts to any size without restricting blood flow. Choose monochrome sets in deep shades: camel, dark chocolate, graphite, or deep blue. A single color visually elongates your height, compensating for the added volume. But there is an important limitation: This technique doesn't work with thin, flimsy knits, which will treacherously highlight the seams of your underwear and every wrinkle on your body. Look for a weight of at least 300 g/m².

Bias cut dresses + architectural top
Formula: Silk slip dress + structured long blazer + mules.

Dresses cut on the bias (at a 45-degree angle to the grain) are absolute magic for pregnant women. Research by the WGSN Fashion Institute confirms that this cut has a unique physics: the fabric becomes flexible, stretching where volume is needed (the belly and bust), and gently falling where it isn't (the lower back), without creating a "bubble" at the back. Layering a jacket with a defined shoulder line over such a flowing dress restores a more composed figure.
Layering "open": slimming verticals
Formula: a fitted basic dress + an unbuttoned shirt made of thick cotton or a trench coat.
There is a rule in styling: 1 open vertical = minus 2 sizes By wearing a long vest or a thick shirt unbuttoned, you create two vertical lines that visually "cut" the belly's volume at the sides. The silhouette instantly becomes more graceful. But remember: this rule breaks down if the bottom layer is also baggy.

Start for freeTissues that save the day: thermoregulation and the fight against edema
Let's talk physiology. In the third trimester, your cardiovascular system is working hard. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH, 2023), a woman's basal body temperature rises in late pregnancy, and her circulating blood volume increases by 40-50%. Simply put: you're constantly hot.
During this period, polyester becomes your worst enemy. It creates a greenhouse effect, which not only causes discomfort but also directly worsens swelling. Ditch synthetics in favor of smart blended fabrics.
- Tencel and Cupra: Innovative wood fibers that cool the skin and absorb moisture 50% better than cotton.
- Fine merino wool: Paradoxically, merino wool is one of the best materials for thermoregulation; it breathes very well.
- Viscose + elastane: Look for 2% to 5% elastane. Without it, the fabric will quickly stretch out around the stomach and lose its shape after just one wash.

Shoes: How to maintain style when your feet are swollen and your size has changed
One of the most harmful pregnancy myths is: "You need absolutely flat ballet flats or sneakers." As someone who works closely with orthopedic doctors when choosing a wardrobe, I am categorically against ballet flats with thin soles.

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), the hormone relaxin, which loosens ligaments before childbirth, flattens the arch of the foot. About 60% of women experience a size increase of 0.5-1.0. A flat sole, coupled with a shifted center of gravity (due to the abdomen), places enormous stress on the heels and spine.
Yours office shoes Everyday pairs should have a micro-heel (2-3 cm) or a good cushioning platform. Here are stylish alternatives that will save you in the 8th and 9th months, when tying your own shoelaces becomes an Olympic sport:
- Step-down loafers: A brilliant invention. You can wear them like classic loafers, or if your feet are swollen by the evening, simply press the soft heel into the shoes and wear them as clogs. The investment in a pair of these (usually in the range of €120–€250) will pay for itself many times over.
- Suede mules: Soft suede adapts to the width of the foot better than smooth leather.
- Hands-free shoes: models into which the foot simply “slides” without the help of hands.

Office wardrobe before maternity leave: maintaining an expert image
Let's get back to my client Anna. To make sure she looked like a CEO at final meetings, not like a tired clinic patient, we completely removed baggy sweaters from her wardrobe.
For the office, I recommend knit polo dresses. The collar evokes a business dress code and instantly ties the look together. Drawstring trousers made of fine wool are a great alternative to classic trousers. Unlike maternity pants, they look expensive and classy. Perfect. business capsule wardrobe At this stage it requires a minimum of things, but a maximum of quality.
"Your best friend in the third trimester is status accessories. A chunky gold chain, an expensive watch, a sturdy, structured bag—these elements draw attention to themselves and convey your professional acumen, distracting the eye from your altered body proportions."

Stylist checklist: 5 things you should absolutely avoid wearing in late pregnancy
This is my subjective, but firm, opinion based on hundreds of fittings. If you want to maintain comfort and aesthetics, avoid these items:
- Maternity jeans with a huge knitted insert covering the entire belly. This is the most counterintuitive insight, but trust me: they're terrible. The insert constantly slips down when you walk, the elastic presses on your bladder, and the denim-knit seam cuts your figure in half, visually shortening your legs. Opt for a stretchy maxi skirt instead.
- Rigid belts. Even if you are trying to emphasize your waist above your belly, corset elements and stiff leather impair blood circulation.
- Small print (polka dots, flowers). On the stretched fabric of the abdomen, the small pattern is distorted, deformed and greatly cheapens the image, making it appear childish.
- Thin viscose jersey (up to 200 g/m²). It will highlight every elastic band of your panties and every strap of your bra.
- Shoes with complex ankle fastenings. The straps will cut into your swollen feet by mid-day.
Bottom Line: Your Style is Your Stretch
Clothes in the third trimester aren't just a way to cover your belly. They're your psychological anchor, a tool that helps you maintain your identity in the face of enormous life changes. When your body is temporarily out of your control, your style is something you still have control over.

I encourage you to take stock today. Put away all the items that are tight, constricting, or make you feel insecure. Keep just 7-10 perfect pieces on the rail: a crisp ribbed suit, a bias-cut dress, a luxurious oversized blazer, and comfortable loafers. If you're having trouble putting together outfits with what you have, upload these items to MioLook , and artificial intelligence will put together the perfect capsules for you for every day left before giving birth.
Remember the most important thing: while carrying a new life, you don't have to give up your own. You can, and should, look amazing.
