What is a tutu skirt?
Tutu skirt (Chopinka) — is a fluffy, multi-layered skirt made of light, translucent fabric (tulle, mesh, or organza) that came into everyday fashion from the ballet wardrobe.
The name "chopinka" refers to the ballet "Chopiniana." In this production, dancers performed in long, flowing, and soft skirts, a radical departure from the stiff, short, classical tutus. The transition of this element from stage costume to urban fashion began during the New Look era of the 1950s. The tulle skirt finally cemented its status as an everyday item thanks to Carrie Bradshaw's iconic looks in "Sex and the City."
Distinctive features
The piece is made of three to six layers of thin, soft tulle. They create airy volume without the use of a rigid internal frame or plastic rings.
The fabric is tightly gathered at the waist and sewn to a thick fabric belt or wide elastic band. This cut creates a distinct A-line silhouette. The classic Chopinka is made midi-length—just below the knee or mid-calf. This is the main difference from theatrical mini-tutus. A thick, opaque petticoat (cover) is a mandatory element of the design. It matches the tone of the main fabric, offsetting the transparency of the upper layers of mesh.
What to combine with
Airy tulle looks harmonious with rough and dense materials. Stylists exploit the principle of contrasting textures, pairing the skirt with a leather biker jacket, a voluminous chunky knit sweater, or a heavy denim shirt.
For everyday wear, wear the Chopenka with a basic, plain white T-shirt or one with a minimalist print. For a more casual look, pair it with sneakers, trainers, or chunky lace-up boots.
For an evening out, choose a fitted top with thin straps or a silk blouse. Classic stiletto pumps or open sandals complete the look. Since a tutu skirt creates a lot of volume at the bottom, a semi-fitted top is recommended. Bulky items like sweaters or shirts are tucked into the front waistband to accentuate the waistline.
