What is a balloon skirt?
Balloon skirt — is a style of skirt with a voluminous silhouette, the hem of which is gathered and tucked inward, creating the visual effect of an inflated bubble or ball.
This silhouette was first introduced by couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga in 1954. It later gained widespread popularity in the 1980s, becoming an integral part of cocktail style, and then experienced another surge in popularity in the early 2000s.

The garment's key design feature is the difference in layers. The volume is achieved by cutting the outer layer of fabric longer and wider than the inner layer. It is then sewn to the base lining along the hem, creating a dense gather.
Distinctive features
The basic design is always a two-layer structure. The obligatory presence of a dense lining and a wider top layer creates the characteristic rounded folds at the hem.

Volume distribution varies depending on the cut. A skirt can be gathered from the waist down, creating maximum flare, or it can begin with a smooth yoke at the hips.
To maintain the architectural form, dense, shape-retaining materials are used. Designers most often choose taffeta, cotton poplin, nylon, heavy silk, or raincoat fabric.

The style is available in all proportions, from extreme mini to floor-length maxi. However, the midi length is considered the most classic and versatile option.
What to combine with
The traditional rule of proportion dictates balancing a voluminous bottom with a fitted top. Basic turtlenecks, sleek bodysuits, fitted tops, stiff corsets, and fine, smooth knits all accomplish this.

Modern styling allows for pairing with voluminous tops, including oversized jackets, sweatshirts, and chunky sweaters. In such outfits, it's important to accentuate the waist with a belt or opt for a cropped top.
Chunky lace-up boots or chunky sneakers create a stylistic contrast. They tone down the dressiness of the skirt, making the look more casual and relaxed.
To maintain the feminine and romantic aesthetic of the style, classic footwear styles are used. Ballet flats, Mary Janes, or heeled pumps harmoniously complete the elegant silhouette.
