What is a cargo skirt?
Cargo skirt — is an element of women's wardrobe, inspired by military and work uniforms, the main feature of which is the presence of large patch pockets.

Historically, this silhouette evolved from cargo trousers, which were developed in the 1930s for the British military. The additional compartments on the garments were designed to conveniently carry ammunition and first aid kits. The silhouette made its way into women's wardrobes much later, becoming iconic during the Y2K era (late 1990s and early 2000s).
The cargo skirt has become a staple of modern street style. The style is prized for its combination of practicality, comfortable fit, and bold texture, which adds complexity and layering to any look.
Distinctive features
A key design element is the voluminous patch pockets, often closed with closed flaps that snap or Velcro fasten. They are typically located on the sides, at knee level, or closer to the hem.

Traditionally, these skirts are made from dense, shape-stable materials that can withstand heavy wear. The most popular are cotton twill, stiff denim, heavy nylon, and lightweight raincoat fabric (parachute fabric).
The design makes extensive use of utilitarian hardware, including drawstrings with plastic or metal fasteners, textile belts with snap closures, rivets, heavy-duty tractor zippers, and contrasting accent stitching.
The cut offers a wide variety of styles. Designers offer extreme 2000s-style minis, straight midi dresses with deep front slits for ample stride, and voluminous maxis with elastic drawstrings at the hem.
What to combine with
When styling cargo skirts, the principle of textured contrast is often employed. Rough, utilitarian fabric and abundant hardware are balanced by a distinctly feminine top. This is achieved through thick, boned corsets, silk lingerie-style tops, and lace or translucent chiffon blouses.

In everyday wardrobes, this style pairs seamlessly with simple basics. Pair the skirt with cropped crop tops, fitted knit long-sleeved shirts, oversized cotton hoodies, and oversized bomber jackets.

The choice of footwear sets the overall tone of the look. To maintain a strict military aesthetic, choose leather lace-up combat boots or chunky running sneakers. For a sophisticated, eclectic look, complement the skirt with elegant sandals with thin straps, leather mules, or classic pumps.
