What are cargo pants?

Cargo pants - These are loose trousers, originally created for active physical work and military needs, the main feature of which is the presence of many roomy pockets.

The model originally appeared in 1938 as part of the British Army's Battle Dress uniform. The pockets were designed for convenient storage of ammunition and radios. In the 1940s, this piece of equipment was adapted by the US Army.

In civilian wardrobes, cargo pants have evolved from workwear for workers and fishermen to an everyday style staple. They've become an iconic element of streetwear and the Y2K era.

Distinctive features

The main recognizable element is the patch pocket. Traditionally located on the sides of the thighs or calves, they are often equipped with flaps, snaps, or Velcro to keep their contents secure.

Classic cargo pants feature a straight or wide cut for freedom of movement. Modern variations include tapered styles, such as joggers with elastic hems, and voluminous parachute pants.

Authentic models are crafted from dense cotton twill, canvas, or ripstop fabric with reinforced thread. Fashionable interpretations are made from denim, nylon, faux leather, as well as silk or satin.

What to combine with

For casual street style, wide cargo pants made of thick cotton or nylon are paired with crop tops and fitted bodysuits. The look is completed with oversized hoodies and chunky sneakers.

Smart casual styling is built on contrasting textures and volumes. Smooth cargo pants are paired with a tailored straight-cut jacket, a basic turtleneck, and heels, such as pumps or pointed-toe ankle boots.

When choosing outerwear, voluminous hems are balanced with cropped bomber jackets or classic leather biker jackets. Cargo jackets also look harmonious with structured long coats.
