What is a tapered cut?

Tapered - is a type of cut of trousers or jeans that gradually tapers from the knee to the ankle, while remaining loose in the hip area.

Tapered cut jeans with a characteristic taper from the knee to the ankle.

The term comes from the English verb taper , which translates as "to taper" or "to taper off." International terminology for this silhouette is the tapered fit. This cut is a compromise between the classic straight and skinny fit. It combines the comfort of loose trousers with the neat appearance of tapered styles.

Distinctive features of the silhouette

The key feature of the fit is the ample volume in the pelvic area and upper thighs. This ensures freedom of movement and comfort, regardless of the thickness of the chosen fabric.

The leg tapers noticeably from just above the knee down to the hem. At the ankle, the width narrows, but the fabric doesn't cling tightly to the leg like in skinny styles.

Classic tapered trousers often feature pleats at the waist. This design element creates additional volume at the top, enhancing the visual contrast with the narrow bottom.

What to wear with tapered trousers and jeans

In casual style, tapered jeans are combined with basic straight-cut T-shirts, oversized hoodies and chunky sneakers.

For a smart-casual look, wear trousers of this cut with tucked-in shirts, slim turtlenecks, soft, unstructured jackets, and loafers. The tapered hem allows the legs to remain visible above shoes, making this cut ideal for showcasing statement boots, pumps, or sneakers.

A popular styling trick when wearing jeans and tapered trousers is turning up the leg. Rolling the cuff up one or two times reveals the ankle, visually lightening the silhouette, and further accentuating the footwear.
