What is a raglan sleeve?
Raglan sleeve — is a special type of clothing cut in which the sleeve is cut together with the shoulder section of the garment, forming a single unit without a shoulder seam. The main visual feature of this design is the diagonal seam that runs from the armpit to the neckline or collarbone.

The cut is named after British Field Marshal Baron Raglan. After losing his arm at the Battle of Waterloo, a coat with this sleeve design was designed for him to make the outerwear easier to put on and take off.
The main functional advantage of the raglan is its maximum freedom of movement. The lack of rigid shoulder line makes the cut versatile and comfortable for a variety of body types.
Main types of raglan
In clothing design, there are several modifications of this cut, which differ in the shape of the armhole line.
- Standard (classic) raglan: The armhole line runs diagonally from the armpit to the neckline, interrupting the neckline.
- Zero raglan: the armhole line starts from the highest point of the shoulder and smoothly descends to the armpit.
- Semi-raglan: a short shoulder seam construction in which the armhole line does not extend to the neckline.
- Raglan shoulder strap: the sleeve flows into the shoulder yoke, creating a horizontal line on the shoulder, which is often used in classic trench coats.
- Fantasy raglan: the armhole line has a complex shape (curved or broken) and can transition into reliefs on the front or back.

How to wear and what to combine with
In terms of visual figure correction, a raglan softens broad shoulders and creates a smoother silhouette. However, contrasting sleeves, typical of baseball jerseys, conversely, accentuate the shoulder girdle.

Coats and trench coats with raglan sleeves are ideal for layering. They easily accommodate a voluminous jacket or thick sweater without feeling constricted or bunched at the armholes.
Casual knits, like oversized hoodies and sweaters, work great with straight-leg jeans, joggers, or leggings. These combinations highlight the relaxed aesthetic of the cut.

For an elegant look, tuck a cashmere raglan jumper into a silk midi skirt or tailored palazzo pants. This technique strikes the perfect balance between casualness and classic style.
