What is a garter belt?
Garter belt — is an element of women's underwear designed to secure stockings on the legs using special straps with fasteners.
In professional and historical terminology, when asked what a garter belt is called, the answer is often "garter belt" or the historical term "garter belt" (the name given to the straps with clips). Historically, this accessory evolved from the corset. In the early 20th century, it became a standalone wardrobe item when tight, supportive garments fell out of fashion.
Initially, the belt served a purely practical purpose, holding up non-elastic nylon and silk stockings. With the advent of tights and silicone-based stockings, it transitioned into the category of decorative and aesthetic underwear.
Main types
Modern lingerie manufacturers produce several basic designs:
- Classic belt. A narrow or medium-width strip of fabric (lace, silk, mesh) placed at the waist or upper thigh bones. Traditionally, it is fitted with four pages.
- Vintage (wide) belt. A shaping style that covers the stomach and thighs. It often has six to eight panels to securely hold non-elastic seamed stockings in place.
- Decorative belt (thong belt). A narrow design, often consisting only of elastic or thin lace, worn low on the hips and serving only an aesthetic function.
- Integrated models. Corsets, bustiers, graces or high-waisted panties that already have permanent or removable garters sewn onto them.
How to wear
The belt requires special stockings (without silicone strips on the back of the elastic) to be worn underneath the belt. They should have a tight welt to ensure a secure grip with a metal or plastic clip. According to lingerie etiquette, panties are worn over the belt and straps—this ensures comfort throughout the day and eliminates the need to unfasten the stockings when using the restroom.
To put on and adjust the belt, stand with your foot slightly elevated. Fasten the front clips first, then the back ones, and then check the straps for tightness. They should not sag or pull excessively on the fabric.
Garter belts pair well with loose skirts and dresses (A-line, sun-cut, or flared). Under form-fitting clothing, such as a pencil skirt or slim trousers, the texture of the clips and straps will be visible, which violates dress code rules.
