What is a bustier?
Bustier — is an element of women's wardrobe, consisting of a short, underwired top that combines the functions of a bra and a corset.

This garment originally appeared in the 19th century solely as underwear. In the second half of the 20th century, the bustier transformed into a standalone outerwear item worn for display.
The main function of the product is to support and lift the bust. At the same time, the bustier provides a snug fit to the upper torso without the extreme constriction typical of a classic historical corset.
Distinctive features
The design of a bustier has several distinctive features that distinguish it from a typical crop top or tank top. Built-in cups are a must. They can be soft or have a push-up effect for additional support and shaping of the bust.
The garment's frame is formed by vertical relief seams and flexible boning made of plastic or metal. These elements maintain the top's shape and prevent the fabric from bunching up horizontally as you move.

A classic bustier ends at the natural waistline or floating ribs. It's shorter than a traditional corset but longer than a standard bra.
Traditionally, a long row of hooks on the back serves as a fastener. Modern designs also feature lacing, a hidden side zipper, or a metal front zipper. The garments are made from materials that retain their shape: heavy cotton, denim, genuine leather, as well as classic evening fabrics like silk, satin, and velvet.
What to combine with
The bustier is widely used in both day and evening looks, both as an underlayer and a top. As a base layer, it's worn under an oversized, tailored jacket, a tailored tuxedo, or a chunky knit cardigan. This creates an architectural contrast between the loose top and the tight-fitting crop top.

When styling a bustier as a standalone top, pair it with high-waisted belts. Wide-leg palazzo pants, mom jeans, or high-waisted midi skirts balance the figure's proportions and minimize exposed skin around the midriff.

To create layered looks, a sturdy bustier made of leather, denim, or suiting is worn over other clothing. A corset top is paired with a basic white shirt, a thin merino wool turtleneck, or a loose shirtdress.
