What is a babydoll dress?
Babydoll dress — This is a short, loose A-line dress with a high waistline starting just below the bust and a voluminous skirt.

The style originated in women's underwear: initially, it referred to short, loose nightgowns. The name and worldwide popularity of the style were cemented after the release of the 1956 film "Baby Doll," in which the lead character, Carroll Baker, wore similar nightgowns.
In the 1960s, thanks to designer Cristóbal Balenciaga and youth subcultures, the style moved from the category of loungewear to everyday and evening wear.
Distinctive features
The main feature of the cut is the empire waist. The cut line falls directly under the bust, completely concealing the natural waist and hip contours.

- Volume and airiness: The skirt has a trapezoid shape, often complemented with gathers, flounces, tiers or pleats to create a doll-like silhouette.
- Length: The classic version is a mini length (well above the knee), although modern interpretations can reach midi length.
- Decor and details: The style is characterized by the use of puff sleeves, thin straps, ruffles, lace inserts, bows and accent collars.
- Materials: To create the required volume, shape-holding fabrics (cotton poplin, taffeta, organza) or light, flowing materials (chiffon, tulle, silk) are used.
What to combine with
The dress's childish and distinctly feminine cut requires careful balance. One of the most popular styling techniques is playing with contrast.

- Rough shoes: The dress looks harmonious with massive lace-up boots, loafers with tractor soles, or voluminous sneakers.
- Romantic style: To create a classic look, complement the style with Mary Jane shoes, ballet flats, sandals with thin straps and micro-bags.
- Layering: Babydoll dresses with thin straps are usually worn over basic white T-shirts, tight turtlenecks, or long sleeves made of translucent mesh.

When choosing outerwear, cropped biker jackets, oversized denim jackets, or straight-leg menswear-style blazers are best for balancing proportions. These wardrobe items visually elongate the silhouette and tone down the dressiness of the dress.
